What Are Cataracts?
/
Our eyes contain a clear lens called the crystalline lens, which sits behind the cornea. The lens focuses light onto the retina, and our brains interpret that light as visual images. Cataracts are the gradual clouding of this normally clear lens. They occur as proteins within the lens of the eye begin to break down and clump together, often due to the natural aging process.
The Symptoms of Cataracts
You may be developing cataracts if you notice vision problems such as:
- Sensitivity to light
- Increasing difficulty seeing at night
- Halos around lights
- Dimmed, cloudy, or blurry vision
- Frequent changes in glasses or contacts prescription
- Double vision when looking with one eye
When prescription eyeglasses and contacts don't provide clear vision for cataract sufferers, the only other treatment option is surgery. Our doctors serving West Central Ohio can remove your cataracts and replace your natural lens with an artificial lens to restore your vision.
What Are the Risk Factors for Developing Cataracts?
Patients who are more at risk for developing cataracts include those who:
- Are over age 40
- Have diabetes
- Have high blood pressure
- Are obese
- Have had a previous eye surgery
- Have had a previous eye injury
- Smoke
- Drink excessive amounts of alcohol
You may be able to decrease your risk of developing cataracts or slow their development by attending regular eye exams, wearing sunglasses, improving the lighting in your home, avoiding alcohol and nicotine products, and eating a healthy diet.

View on GoogleThis doctor came in and opened his office solely for the purpose of seeing my father when he was not doing well on both the Saturday AND the Sunday of a recent weekend. I do not need to know anything else to know that this is a totally dedicated man and a great human being. There was no "take an aspirin and call me Monday."

Our Available Intraocular Lenses
PanOptix Multifocal IOL

IQ Vivity Multifocal IOL
The IQ Vivity™ Multifocal IOL can improve your vision at all ranges with a lower risk of visual disturbances, such as glares and halos around lights. You may still require glasses for up-close tasks.
Cataract Surgery Recovery
In the days following your surgery, be sure to use your provided eye drops to prevent infection, don't drive or pick up heavy objects, and avoid putting pressure on your eye. You will be provided a plastic eye shield to wear at night, and you should keep it on for the entire prescribed duration (usually about a week). You may experience vastly improved vision as soon as 24 hours after surgery, but it is normal for vision to be blurry for several days. It may take several weeks to completely heal. During this time, you may experience side effects such as:
- Discomfort
- Itchiness
- Soreness
- Tearing
- Difficulty seeing in bright light
Your doctor will let you know when you can resume driving and other tasks based on your follow-up exams.

A nutritious diet can help improve multiple aspects of your health, including your eyesight. Increase your intake of foods rich in vitamin C such as citrus, and your intake of vitamin E, which is found in dark leafy greens, certain oils, and nuts.
Get Regular Eye Exams
If it has been awhile since your last exam, meet with one of our doctors to find out how often you should be visiting us. Our Sidney, Ohio-based offices can identify your risk factors and provide the ongoing care needed to protect your vision.
Protect Your Eyes
UV light can damage the proteins in your eye lens, causing cataracts to develop more rapidly. It's important to protect your eyes with sunglasses or shade from a wide-brimmed hat when going outside into direct sunlight.
What If I Have Cataracts and Glaucoma?
If you have both cataracts and glaucoma, the doctors at our Sidney, Bellefontaine, Celina, and Troy offices may be able to alter your procedure to treat both concerns at once. During cataract surgery, our ophthalmologist can place the FDA-approved iStent Inject® device in your eye, restoring your eye's ability to drain fluid. This relieves pressure in the eye and controls glaucoma.
